Are Calico Cats Always Female?

Is a calico a breed?

The term "calico" specifically refers to the three-color pattern. Tortoiseshell cats (orange and black without white) follow the same genetic rules and are also almost exclusively female. The white spotting that distinguishes calicos from torties is controlled by a different gene entirely.
