Why Do Dogs Get Stuck When Mating?

What causes the tie?

During mating, a structure at the base of the male dog's penis called the bulbus glandis swells significantly once inside the female. At the same time, the female's vaginal muscles contract around this swelling, creating a lock that holds them together. This is what's known as the copulatory tie or breeding tie. It's an evolved mechanism that increases the chances of successful fertilization by keeping the dogs connected while sperm is transferred. The process is involuntary on both sides; neither dog is choosing to stay connected.

How long does the tie last?

A typical tie lasts anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes, though some can go longer. During this time, the male will usually swing one leg over so that the two dogs are standing end-to-end facing opposite directions. This looks awkward but it's a normal positional shift. Both dogs may seem uncomfortable or restless, but they're not in pain. The swelling will subside naturally, and they'll separate on their own when the process is complete.

Should I try to separate them?

Absolutely not. Trying to pull two tied dogs apart can cause serious injury to both animals, including tearing of reproductive tissue. No matter how alarming it looks, the safest thing to do is let nature take its course. Stay calm, keep the area quiet so the dogs aren't startled into sudden movement, and wait for them to separate naturally. If a tie lasts longer than 45 minutes or either dog seems to be in genuine distress, contact your vet for guidance.

Does a tie mean the female is pregnant?

A tie increases the likelihood of pregnancy, but it doesn't guarantee it. Fertilization depends on timing relative to the female's ovulation cycle. It's also worth noting that pregnancy can occur even without a full tie, though it's less likely. If you didn't intend for your dogs to mate and they tied, contact your vet to discuss your options as soon as possible.
