Why is your scent so important to dogs?

A dog's sense of smell is their primary way of understanding and interacting with the world. Your personal scent is the most significant olfactory signature in your dog's life; it represents safety, food, companionship, and the person they are most attached to. When you are physically present, your scent is everywhere. When you leave, it fades. Worn clothing retains a concentrated version of your scent, and for a dog, lying on it is the next best thing to lying next to you. It is the same instinct that leads dogs to sleep in their owner's bed or gravitate to the spot on the couch where you usually sit.

Why dirty laundry over clean?

Clean clothes have been washed, which removes the oils, sweat, and skin cells that carry your personal scent. Dirty clothes, particularly items worn close to the skin like undershirts, socks, and pajamas, are loaded with your scent. From a dog's perspective, the dirtier the item, the more "you" it smells like, and the more comforting it is. This is why dogs will bypass a folded stack of clean laundry to pull a worn t-shirt out of the hamper. They are selecting the item with the strongest olfactory connection to you.

Is this related to separation anxiety?

It can be, but it does not have to be. Many well-adjusted dogs with no anxiety issues sleep on their owner's clothes simply because the scent is comforting. Dogs with separation anxiety, however, may seek out clothing more urgently and may also chew or destroy the items in addition to lying on them. If your dog only lies on your clothes and seems relaxed while doing it, that is normal comfort-seeking. If they shred the clothing, only do it when you are gone, and show other signs of distress, that points to anxiety that may benefit from behavioral support.

Should you let them do it?

If you do not mind the fur and wrinkles, there is no reason to stop it. It is a harmless comfort behavior. Some owners intentionally leave a worn shirt near their dog's bed as a calming tool, particularly for dogs that struggle with being left alone. If you want to redirect the behavior, provide a dedicated blanket or bed cover that you have worn or slept with so it carries your scent, and place it where the dog sleeps. This gives them scent comfort without sacrificing your wardrobe.
