Are Rottweilers Good Family Dogs?

What's their actual temperament?

Well-bred, well-socialized Rottweilers are confident, calm, and deeply loyal. They're often described as "velcro dogs" by their owners because they follow their people from room to room and want to be involved in everything. They're playful and sometimes goofy, despite their imposing appearance. With their own family, Rottweilers are typically gentle, patient, and affectionate. The AKC describes the ideal Rottweiler temperament as calm, confident, and courageous, with a self-assured aloofness that doesn't lend itself to indiscriminate friendships.

Are they dangerous?

Any large, powerful dog can be dangerous if improperly raised. Rottweilers are strong, have a significant bite force, and were originally bred as driving and guarding dogs. An undersocialized or poorly trained Rottweiler can absolutely be a liability. But the same applies to any large working breed. The breed itself is not inherently aggressive; aggression in individual Rottweilers is almost always traceable to poor socialization, irresponsible breeding, or neglectful or abusive environments.

What do they need from an owner?

Early and thorough socialization starting as a puppy is non-negotiable. Exposure to a wide variety of people, places, animals, and situations during the critical socialization window builds the confidence and stability the breed needs. Consistent, positive-reinforcement training is essential; Rottweilers are smart and eager to please, but they're also strong-willed and will push boundaries if leadership isn't clear. Daily exercise (an hour minimum), mental stimulation, and a structured home environment round out their needs.

Are they good with kids?

Rottweilers raised with children are often wonderfully gentle and protective. Their calm demeanor and patience make them good companions for older children. With very young children, their size alone can be a concern since an excited 100-pound dog can knock over a toddler without any ill intent. Supervised interactions and teaching both the dog and children how to behave around each other are important. As with all large breeds, never leave young children unsupervised with any dog regardless of breed.
