Apples offer a solid nutritional profile for dogs. They are high in fiber, which supports digestion, and contain vitamins A and C. They are also low in protein and fat, which makes them a good treat option for older dogs or dogs on weight management plans. The crunchy texture can even help clean residue off your dog's teeth, though it is no substitute for actual dental care.

Why do the seeds matter?

Apple seeds contain amygdalin, a compound that releases cyanide when broken down during digestion. A few seeds accidentally swallowed will not harm a dog; the amount of cyanide is extremely small per seed. But there is no reason to take the chance, especially with regular feeding. The core is also a choking hazard and hard to digest. Slice the apple away from the core, discard the center, and you have eliminated both concerns entirely.

How much apple can a dog eat?

A few slices at a time is the right amount for most dogs. Apples do contain natural sugar, so while they are much healthier than processed treats, they should still be an occasional snack rather than a daily staple. One or two slices for a small dog and three or four for a larger breed is a reasonable portion. You can serve them raw, frozen for a chewier texture, or mixed into their regular food.
