Why are carrots so good for dogs?

Carrots are loaded with beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A for eye health, immune function, and skin quality. They are also high in fiber, which helps with digestion, and extremely low in calories, roughly 30 calories per medium carrot. For dogs on a diet, carrots give the satisfaction of a crunchy treat at a fraction of the caloric cost of commercial snacks. Many veterinarians specifically recommend carrots as a healthy treat alternative.

Raw or cooked?

Both work. Raw carrots are great for chewing and dental health; the mechanical action of crunching through a raw carrot helps scrape plaque off teeth. Cooked carrots are easier to digest and release more beta-carotene during digestion. If your dog is a gulper who swallows food without chewing, cooked or sliced carrots are safer since large raw chunks could be a choking risk for aggressive eaters. Baby carrots are a convenient size for smaller dogs.

Can you give too many carrots?

It is hard to overdo carrots given how low-calorie they are, but large quantities can cause loose stools due to the fiber content. Extremely high vitamin A intake over long periods can cause issues, though you would need to feed an unrealistic amount of carrots daily for that to happen. A few carrots a day is perfectly fine for most dogs and far better than most alternatives.
