What is solanine and why does it matter?

Solanine and tomatine are glycoalkaloids found in the stems, leaves, and unripe fruit of the tomato plant. These compounds are part of the plant's natural defense system and are toxic to dogs in sufficient quantities. Symptoms of solanine poisoning include gastrointestinal distress, lethargy, weakness, and confusion. The concentration is highest in the green parts of the plant and decreases significantly as the fruit ripens. By the time a tomato is fully red, the solanine content is low enough to be safe.

How much ripe tomato is safe?

A few slices or a couple of cherry tomatoes as an occasional treat is perfectly fine. Ripe tomatoes contain lycopene, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, all of which offer some nutritional benefit. They are not a necessary part of a dog's diet, but they are not harmful in normal amounts. Avoid feeding tomato sauce, ketchup, or cooked tomato products, as these typically contain salt, sugar, garlic, onion, or other additives that dogs should not have.

What if my dog gets into the garden?

If your dog chews on tomato plant leaves or stems, or eats green, unripe tomatoes from the vine, watch for symptoms like drooling, stomach upset, diarrhea, or unusual lethargy. A small nibble is unlikely to cause serious harm, but larger amounts warrant a call to your vet. If you grow tomatoes and your dog has garden access, consider fencing off the plants. The ripe fruit is safe, but dogs do not distinguish between the fruit and the rest of the plant.
