What makes watermelon a good treat?

Watermelon is about 92% water, which makes it a fantastic hydration boost on hot days. It is also low in calories and contains no fat or cholesterol. The vitamin A supports eye health, B6 helps with brain function, and vitamin C supports the immune system. For dogs that need to lose weight or are on restricted diets, watermelon gives them the satisfaction of a treat without the caloric load of most commercial snacks.

Why are the seeds and rind a problem?

Watermelon seeds are not toxic, but they can cause intestinal blockage in smaller dogs if swallowed in quantity. One or two seeds accidentally eaten is not an emergency, but intentionally feeding seeded watermelon is unnecessary risk. The rind is harder to digest than the flesh and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, or a blockage if a dog chews off and swallows a large piece. Seedless watermelon with the rind removed is the easiest way to avoid both problems.

How should you serve it?

Cut the flesh into small, bite-sized chunks appropriate for your dog's size. You can also freeze the chunks for a longer-lasting summer treat, or blend them into a slush. Some owners freeze watermelon in a Kong for a hydrating puzzle toy. A few chunks a couple of times a week is a reasonable amount for most dogs.
