Can You Put Laminate Over Tile?

QUICK ANSWER

Yes, you can install laminate flooring over tile and it is one of the easier flooring updates. Laminate floats above the existing tile without any glue or mortar. Fill grout lines deeper than 1/8 inch with floor patch, add an underlayment with a moisture barrier, then click-lock the planks.

Laminate over tile is one of the most popular ways to refresh a tile floor without ripping it out. The laminate floats on top of the tile, separated by a thin underlayment, and clicks together rather than getting glued or nailed down. Done right, it looks great and lasts decades. Here is what prep matters and what to watch out for.

Why does laminate work so well over tile?

Laminate is a floating floor, meaning it does not attach to whatever is underneath. The planks lock together with their own tongue-and-groove edges and rest on top of the existing surface with an underlayment between. That means the tile below does not have to bond to anything, it just has to be flat enough to support the laminate without creating high or low spots. This makes tile one of the easiest surfaces to install laminate over.

What prep does the tile need?

Clean the tile thoroughly first. Use a degreaser and rinse to remove any soap scum, wax, or grease. Fill grout lines deeper than 1/8 inch with floor patch or self-leveler so the laminate has a flat surface to rest on. Replace any loose or rocking tiles. Check the entire floor with a long straight edge looking for any high or low spots greater than 3/16 inch over 10 feet, and address those with self-leveler if needed.

Do you need an underlayment over tile?

Yes, always use a quality underlayment when installing laminate over tile. The underlayment provides moisture protection (tile can transmit moisture from concrete subfloors), sound absorption (tile reflects sound up through the laminate), and a slight cushion that protects the click-lock joints. Use a combo underlayment with a moisture barrier built in, or lay 6-mil polyethylene sheeting first followed by a foam underlayment. Some laminate brands have underlayment pre-attached.

What problems should you watch for?

Height is the most common issue. Adding laminate plus underlayment over tile adds about 3/8 to 1/2 inch of height. Door bottoms may need trimming, transitions to other floors need T-moldings, and appliances may not fit back under counters. Hollow-sounding spots in the laminate after install usually mean an uneven tile underneath that should have been addressed in prep. Click-lock joints can also pop apart over time if the laminate is installed too tight against walls (always leave 1/4 inch expansion gap).

Laminate over tile is one of the cleanest flooring updates because the laminate floats and does not depend on the tile bonding to anything. Clean, fill deep grout lines, add quality underlayment with moisture barrier, click-lock the planks. Leave expansion gaps at walls and plan for the height increase at doorways. Done right, the laminate will last 15 to 25 years.
