What Is The Perseverance Rover?

QUICK ANSWER

Perseverance is a NASA Mars rover that landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, 2021. Its mission is to search for signs of ancient microbial life and collect samples for future return to Earth. Perseverance also delivered Ingenuity, the first powered aircraft to fly on another planet.

Perseverance is NASA's most advanced Mars rover, currently exploring Jezero Crater on Mars. Its main mission is astrobiology: looking for signs of ancient microbial life and collecting samples that may one day be returned to Earth. Perseverance also carried Ingenuity, a small helicopter that became the first aircraft to make powered flight on another planet. The rover has been operating successfully since landing in 2021.

Where did it land?

Jezero Crater. According to NASA, Jezero Crater tells a story of the on-again, off-again nature of Mars's wet past. More than 3.5 billion years ago, river channels spilled over the crater wall and created a lake more than 40 km across and hundreds of meters deep. Perseverance landed there on February 18, 2021. NASA chose Jezero after a five-year study of more than 60 candidate sites. The ancient lake bed is one of the most promising places on Mars to search for signs of past microbial life.

What is its mission?

Search for past life and collect samples. Perseverance's main scientific goal is astrobiology: looking for evidence of ancient microbial life that may have existed when Mars was warmer and wetter billions of years ago. The rover collects rock and regolith samples in sealed tubes that future missions can return to Earth for detailed laboratory analysis. As of late 2024, Perseverance has collected over 24 samples. It also characterizes the geology and climate of Jezero Crater and tests technologies for future human exploration.

What is Ingenuity?

The first Mars helicopter. Perseverance carried Ingenuity, a small drone-like helicopter, to Mars. Ingenuity made its first powered flight on April 19, 2021, becoming the first aircraft to fly under its own power on another planet. The original plan was a 30-day technology demonstration with up to 5 flights. Ingenuity vastly exceeded expectations, completing 72 flights over three years before damaged rotor blades ended its mission in early 2024. The success has inspired plans for future Mars aircraft.

What has it discovered?

Surprising volcanic geology and possible biosignatures. Scientists had expected the Jezero Crater floor to be sedimentary rock from the ancient lake. Instead, Perseverance found igneous (volcanic) rocks, including lava flows and slow-cooling magma deposits. These rocks have interacted with water and could record habitable conditions for microbial life. The rover has also studied Jezero's ancient river delta and climbed the crater rim. Its samples will be examined for biosignatures when returned to Earth.
