What Is The Zodiac?

QUICK ANSWER

The zodiac is the band of constellations along the ecliptic, the path the Sun appears to follow through the sky during the year. Astronomers count 13 constellations in this band (including Ophiuchus), while astrology uses 12. The zodiac is a purely astronomical region; astrological meanings aren't supported by science.

The zodiac is the band of sky through which the Sun appears to move during the year. It's a real astronomical region containing specific constellations. The familiar 12 zodiac signs come from astrology (a belief system, not science), but the underlying constellations exist as real star patterns. Modern astronomers count 13 zodiac constellations, including Ophiuchus, which astrology traditionally excludes.

What is the ecliptic?

The Sun's apparent path through the sky during the year. According to NASA, as Earth orbits the Sun, the Sun appears to move against the background of stars, completing one circuit each year. The path it traces out is called the ecliptic. The Moon and planets also stay near the ecliptic, since they orbit roughly in the same plane as Earth. The constellations the ecliptic passes through are the zodiac. The word zodiac comes from the Greek meaning circle of animals, since most are named for animals or mythological figures.

Why are there 13 constellations?

Modern boundaries include Ophiuchus. The 88 official constellations have precise boundaries set by the International Astronomical Union in 1930. The ecliptic passes through 13 of these constellations: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Ophiuchus, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius, and Pisces. Astrology, developed thousands of years before modern constellation boundaries, divides the ecliptic into 12 equal segments named after constellations but not exactly matching them. Ophiuchus has always been on the ecliptic but was excluded by ancient astrologers.

Are the signs the same as the constellations?

Not anymore. Astrological signs are based on where the Sun was during the seasons over 2,000 years ago. Due to Earth's axial precession, the Sun's actual position has shifted by about one constellation since then. So when astrology says the Sun is in Aries (around March 21), the Sun is actually in Pisces. The astrological signs are now offset from the real constellations by about a month. This shift accumulates slowly and continues to grow.

What does astronomy say about zodiac signs?

Nothing about personality or fate. Astronomy is the science of celestial objects and treats the zodiac constellations as patterns of stars and regions of sky, nothing more. Astrology, which claims the positions of celestial objects influence human personality and events, is not supported by any scientific evidence. Multiple controlled studies have found no correlation between birth signs and personality, life outcomes, or compatibility. The constellations are real; the astrological meanings attached to them are not.
