What Are The Mars Rovers?

QUICK ANSWER

NASA has landed five rovers on Mars: Sojourner (1997), the twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity (2004), Curiosity (2012), and Perseverance (2021). Each was larger and more capable than the last. Curiosity and Perseverance are still operating today, exploring different regions of the planet.

The Mars rovers represent over a quarter century of robotic exploration on the Red Planet. From the microwave-sized Sojourner to the car-sized Curiosity and Perseverance, each rover has built on lessons from the previous mission. Together they've fundamentally changed our understanding of Mars, revealing that it was once a wet, potentially habitable world billions of years ago.

Which rovers has NASA sent?

Five so far. According to NASA, Mars is the only planet known to be inhabited entirely by robots. NASA's five Mars rovers are Sojourner (landed 1997), Spirit and Opportunity (landed 2004), Curiosity (landed 2012), and Perseverance (landed 2021). China's Zhurong rover joined them in 2021 but stopped responding in 2022. The rovers have each focused on different scientific questions, progressively answering whether Mars could have supported life and collecting samples for future return.

How big were they?

Each rover got bigger. Sojourner was tiny, only about the size of a microwave oven (2 feet long, 23 pounds). Spirit and Opportunity were larger, about the size of a golf cart (5 feet long, 400 pounds). Curiosity was a major leap up to car-sized: 10 feet long and 2,000 pounds. Perseverance is a similar size to Curiosity, based on the same chassis. The growth reflects increasing scientific capability; the larger rovers carry more instruments, larger drills, and more powerful nuclear power sources.

What have they found?

Evidence that Mars was once habitable. The combined work of the rovers has confirmed that Mars once had liquid water on its surface, with rivers, lakes, and possibly oceans. Spirit and Opportunity found mineralogical evidence of wet conditions billions of years ago. Curiosity confirmed that Gale Crater once held a habitable lake environment. Perseverance is exploring Jezero Crater, another ancient lake bed, specifically searching for signs of past microbial life and collecting samples that may one day be returned to Earth for analysis.

How long did they last?

Far longer than designed. Sojourner was planned for 7 days but lasted 83. Spirit was planned for 90 days but operated for 6 years. Opportunity was the longevity champion, operating for 15 years and traveling over 28 miles before a dust storm ended its mission in 2018. Curiosity is still operating in 2026, over 14 years after landing. Perseverance is operating well past its primary mission. The rovers have collectively revolutionized our knowledge of Mars and paved the way for future human exploration.
