What Does Kennel Cough Sound Like?

QUICK ANSWER

Kennel cough sounds like a persistent, dry, honking cough, often described as if the dog has something stuck in their throat. It's caused by the Bordetella bacteria and/or viruses, is highly contagious, and typically resolves on its own within 1 to 3 weeks in healthy adult dogs.

If your dog came back from the boarding facility, groomer, or dog park with a harsh, hacking cough that won't quit, it's most likely kennel cough. It sounds worse than it usually is, but it's worth understanding what you're dealing with.

What exactly is kennel cough?

Kennel cough (infectious tracheobronchitis) is an upper respiratory infection caused by a combination of bacteria and viruses, most commonly Bordetella bronchiseptica and canine parainfluenza virus. It inflames the trachea and bronchi, producing that distinctive hacking sound. The AVMA describes it as highly contagious, spreading through airborne droplets, direct contact, and contaminated surfaces. Any place where dogs congregate is a potential hotspot: kennels, shelters, dog parks, grooming salons, and training classes.

How can I tell if it's kennel cough or something else?

The signature kennel cough sound is a dry, forceful, repetitive cough that often ends with a gag or retch. It's different from a wet, productive cough (which might indicate pneumonia) or a soft, low cough (which could suggest heart disease in older dogs). Most dogs with kennel cough are otherwise acting normal: eating, drinking, and alert. If your dog is lethargic, refusing food, has a fever, or is struggling to breathe, it could be something more serious and should be seen by a vet.

How long does kennel cough last?

In healthy adult dogs with strong immune systems, kennel cough typically runs its course in 1 to 3 weeks without treatment. During this time, the dog should be isolated from other dogs to prevent spreading it. Rest, humidity (a steamy bathroom can help), and avoiding irritants like smoke and strong cleaning products all help the healing process. Your vet may prescribe a cough suppressant for comfort, and in cases where a secondary bacterial infection develops, antibiotics may be needed.

Is the Bordetella vaccine worth it?

If your dog goes to boarding, daycare, grooming, dog parks, or training classes, yes. The Bordetella vaccine doesn't prevent every cause of kennel cough (multiple pathogens can cause it), but it significantly reduces the risk and severity of the most common form. Most boarding and daycare facilities require it. Talk to your vet about whether it makes sense based on your dog's lifestyle.

Kennel cough sounds terrible but is usually manageable. Keep your dog rested and isolated from other dogs while they recover. If the cough persists beyond 3 weeks, worsens, or comes with other symptoms, your vet can make sure nothing more serious is going on.
