Speeds are relative to different reference frames and don't simply add together in straight lines. Total motion is the combined vector through space, measured against the cosmic microwave background.

These are real motions happening right now. You don't feel any of them because gravity locks you to Earth's surface and all motions are smooth, with no acceleration to detect. Even Einstein had no way to feel them.

Why don't you feel any of this?

The reason none of this motion registers is the same reason you don't feel speed in a smooth-flying airplane. You only feel changes in motion. Accelerations, turns, bumps. Once something moves at constant velocity, your body has no way to detect it. Earth's rotation, orbit, and galactic motion are all roughly constant. There's no jolt, no wind in your face, no sense of speed at all.

Gravity also keeps you locked to Earth's surface, so you rotate with the planet rather than being left behind in space. The atmosphere moves with you. Everything moves with you. From inside the system, the system feels still.

How accurate is this calculator?

Very. The orbital and galactic motions are well-measured by astronomers and have been confirmed by decades of observation. The numbers used here come from NASA and standard astrophysics references. Your exact speed varies tiny amounts as Earth's orbit isn't a perfect circle, but the calculator's results are accurate to within fractions of a percent.

Why does latitude matter?

Earth's rotation is fastest at the equator, where you're traveling roughly 1,037 mph just from the planet spinning. As you move toward the poles, rotational speed drops to nearly zero. Standing at the exact North or South Pole, you'd rotate in place, moving at essentially zero mph from rotation. The other motions don't change with latitude.

Are we really moving 1.3 million miles per hour?

Yes, roughly, relative to the cosmic microwave background. The motions are measured against different cosmic reference frames and don't add together in simple straight lines, but the total combined motion through the universe lands around that range for everyone on Earth.

Will we ever stop moving?

No. Earth will keep orbiting the Sun for billions of years until the Sun dies. The Sun will keep orbiting the Milky Way's center indefinitely. The Milky Way will eventually collide and merge with Andromeda in about 4.5 billion years, but that just changes the direction of motion, not whether motion happens.

Is the universe expanding faster than this?

Distant galaxies appear to recede from us at speeds proportional to their distance, with the most distant galaxies receding faster than the speed of light. But that's space itself expanding, not local motion. The numbers in this calculator are your motion through space, not space's expansion.
